Boating

One day in June I got to go on a boat ride with Oren and his Grandparents.

I was holding onto my hat when the boat was moving to keep it on my head.

We stopped for a bite to eat near a shallow part of the lake.

Oren and I spent some time pretending to be in the Coast Guard.
Oren did better without the smiling.

There were telescopes and boat parts to adjust.

There were boat issues to discuss.

I then we tried to get the boat started but we were unsuccessful.

Oren's Granddad Phil let me drive the boat on the way home...
he kept saying things like "left" and "right"--then he would try
to pry my hands away from the steering wheel.

Once we got back to shore it was time to throw some rocks into the water.

We made some pretty impressive splashes.

Oren and I got some pretty good rocks into the water...although we never got into the water--even with the sun it was cold.

Dismal Diamond Lake

When my Mommy put my winter coat on me--I guess I knew it was not going to be the sunny summer camping trip I had envisioned.
(That is not our boat--I do not think it is Penny's boat either...)

The only warm place at our campsite was the car.

There was also a nearby lodge we visited to get warm.
(The toys were not great but the Jenga game can be used as blocks in a pinch.)

We did go on one bike ride in the rain...with my plastic cover I was fine-- but my Mommy and Daddy seemed to think it was a little too wet.

The lake had a fine selection of rocks to throw in the water.

Bear is willing to swim in anything.

My Daddy made great campfires at night--where I got to roast marshmallows.

The campground also was an excellent spot for finding sticks of all sizes.

Finally on the last day we saw what the campground is named for--
Thielsen View
There was even some sun that last day and I was able to walk around in a fleece instead of a rain jacket or my winter coat.
(I should mention that this picture is artificially bright.)

Soda Mountain

On a beautiful Sunday in June--we took a hike up Soda Mountain.

There were pretty views and flowers everywhere.
I had trouble looking at the camera there was so much to see...
(Hopefully there will be more about the flowers in another post.)

On the last part of the trail Daddy put me in my pack and we hiked up a steep road...well it was not that steep for me as I just got to ride along.

It took us some time to climb the last little bit--but once we got to the top there were expansive views of the surrounding mountains and of course more flowers.

We climbed the stairs to the deck surrounding the look out tower
from there we could see for a long way...

I climbed up on the rail and had a nice long look.

We could see Mount Pitt--which still had snow on it.
It is that little white cone in the left side of the picture.

Then looking from another vantage point we could see Mt. Shasta...
It is surrounded by clouds in the middle of the picture.

I need to keep myself well hydrated on these mountain treks.

We then had to make our way down the mountain.
I rode on Daddy's back the whole way.

We had fun.

Of Foraging or Hunting and Gathering

Mommy and Daddy took me to the Olympic Rainforest in the Olympic National Park. According to the signs along the trail this is one of the only temperate rainforests in the world. You can read more about what a temperate rain forest is here. I wasn't really sure what they were except that they aren't tropical and they are very wet, getting over 100in of rain a year. This particular place gets about 15 feet a year. We stayed at the Lake Quinalt Lodge which is right on Lake Quinalt. It was a very pretty place and very green. We went for a 3 mile hike near the lodge. I hiked nearly the whole thing except for just a little at the end. There was a lot to eat along the way that my daddy fed me. Here are some pictures of the wild things I ate.

This is a wild Huckleberry - very yummy.

Here is a handfull of Huckleberries my dad gave me to eat.

Here's what wild Huckleberries (Vaccinium parvifolium) look like on the bush.

I also ate lots of wild blueberries. These are my favorite. Fortunately there were lots on the trail.

Daddy giving me some blueberries that he picked.

This is known as a "Highbush Blueberry" (Vaccinium corymbosum) which means that I couldn't reach the fruit so daddy had to pick them for me.

There were also some yellowish berries called Salmon Berries (Rubus spectabilis). These were kind of tart and sometimes bitter - probably because daddy picked them a little early. But I liked them anyway because they are a fruit.

Up close Salmon Berries on the bush. They look a lot like raspberries but different.

Here is an actual wild raspberry bush. I always thought they were called rasberries, but I guess I was wrong.

I like wild Raspberries (Rubus idaeus), but Blueberries are still the best.

Here's a handful of yummy raspberries

Elderberries (Sambucus callicarpa) look yummy but they taste really icky. Mommy and Daddy say they are good for something called wine. I think wine is a bad thing because they yell at me whenever I do it when I don't get my way.

Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus) is something you don't eat unless you are a trained professional. We weren't but you can be if you read this article. Not that it looks at all tasty, but just in case you were tempted check out the picture below.

If the spines and thorns on the stalks and leaves weren't enough then perhaps the spikes facing upwards and downwards on the leaf surfaces are enough to get the message across that this plant doesn't want to be eaten.

There were lots of ferns growing along the trail. These Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant) were my favorites. Though one should, as a rule, not eat ferns - unless, of course, one is a deer. They are still nice to look at.

When in a pinch you could eat some of this Oregon Oxalis (Oxalis oregana). It doesn't taste that great and has a lot of oxalic acid in it. I like the fruits better. This plant was all over in the rain forest.

A Final Bandon

The final morning I woke up at Bandon the sun was out and the tide was really, really, really, low.

My Daddy and I walked between lots of rocks that we had never even seen because they were usually under water.

There were tide pools and starfish. It was cool.

My Daddy had his camera out and took lots and lots of pictures.

There was a baby seal on the rocks waiting for his Mommy to bring him food...
It was so cute--it looked like a puppy.

I found a starfish!
It was time to head home.

A Bandon Group

The reason I got to spend so much of my time in Bandon on the beach
was this group. These are some people my Mommy
spent 2 years in Africa with a long time ago.
In the back:Laurel (RPCV) Lara (RPCV), Becky, Pauline (RPCV),
Greta (RPCV), Liza, Mommy (RPCV), Daddy
In the front: Keith(RPCV), Chad, Richard (RPCV), Jeffery (RPCV),
Todd (RPCV), Ted (RPCV), Kevin.
I am not pictured--sad isn't it?

I was not always on the beach in Bandon.
My cousin Sierra and I got to sit in Grandpa Ed's lap.

Here I am with my Grandma Sybil--don't you like how you can see up my nose.

My Mommy insisted we take a group photo.
